Let's make stuff!

For the last year I have been a design technology teacher assistant. I got the job when the old assistant went to Australia for vacation and never returned. It was a bit dicey at first, the new teacher and me, the new assistant, finding our way through a woodshop curriculum that neither of us had a hand in designing. I hadn't used the tools in many years, I had never taught anyone else how to use them. The projects the students made that semester were, to put it nicely, not so hot. Not a square corner in sight. The year went on and as we got better, they got better. Some projects were a lot harder than expected, some assignments too broad. This year, we are better and the kids are doing great things. I switched from part-time to full-time and I am loving my job! We are designing the space to be used as a "maker space" not just the DT space.

We have hosted the third graders the KG classes last year and we are again this year. The kids love it. We pair the little kids with our older kids. The younger students have such huge pride in what they have created and the MS and HS kids love helping and doing something different for the day. I hope more ES classes can come and create!

Christmas is coming and I've had a few teachers in the space nearly everyday creating some awesome gifts and decorations.

It seems a waste to not share what we are making! With this blog, I can remember all the wonderful things that we make and how we make them and watch my progress as we learn more techniques and tricks to make beautiful projects. If you have advice or questions please share and ask!

Happy making!
